Another Upside to Petroleum

The latest Chronicle of Higher Education gives us another reason why it would be good to Drill, baby drill. “College enrollment, while still growing, has slowed noticeably in areas closest to major petroleum production sites,” Katherine Mangan reported in The Chronicle of Higher Education on December 7, 2012. “If the trend continues, educators worry, it could threaten statewide efforts to create a more highly educated workforce.” Mangan was referring to the state of Texas.

“In response, colleges are trying to make themselves relevant to an industry that typically trains its own workers,” Mangan reported. “The colleges are doing so by starting and expanding both certificate and degree programs to produce welders, pipe fitters, truck drivers, and, at the four-year and graduate levels, engineers.”
