Punch & Judy
A century-old university in the Old Dominion cashiered the last DUI suspect—William J. Frawley, not the one from I Love Lucy—to serve as president and replaced him with the first woman to hold that post. “Less than a year after firing their president for his arrest on two drunken driving charges, members of the governing board at the University of Mary Washington have named his replacement,” Eugene McCormack reported in the Chronicle of Higher Education this month. “Judy G. Hample, a longtime higher-education administrator who is chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, will take the helm of the Virginia liberal arts institution on July 1.”
“She has been head of Pennsylvania’s 14-campus, 110,000-student public university system since 2001 but announced last June that she would step down by July.” Her services do not come cheap.
We reported last year that, as mistress of all she surveyed in the Keystone state, her salary ran to more than a quarter million with some prime real estate thrown in. On the other hand, at the University of Toledo, she drew the ire of the American Association of University Professors, so maybe she’s worth it.
