There have been several vandalism attacks on the “Silent Sam” statue on the campus of the University of North Carolina over the past three years. The statue memorializes UNC graduates who fought in the U.S. Civil War and a student protest group tried to get it removed, without success.

The university is investigating the pro-Black Lives Matter graffiti and has made arrests in previous vandalism incidents.
