The University of Kansas hosts a Confucius Institute, in partnership with the Chinese government, which most people know is run by an authoritarian, communist government. Critics of Confucius Institute locations at American universities contend it is a propaganda tool used by the Communist Chinese government.

A student journalist requested information on the University of Kansas’s Confucius Institute, and the university’s response was to pay $506.50 for the information he requested. Now the journalist is trying to crowdfund (i.e. raise money online from donors) to pay for the information.
