Academic Conference Paper Explores White Privilege behind White Female ‘Becky’ Stereotype

The American Educational Research Association held their annual April meeting in Toronto, Canada, and one of the papers presented at the conference discussed the stereotype of the white working female named “Becky.” Apparently, “Becky” is a stereotype used to describe a white female in the workplace who does not understand other cultures or norms.

A student at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Justin Jimenez, wrote the paper. He claimed that white female teachers are like “Becky” because they are “emboldened” and go about “enacting their whiteness” in classroom settings.
