Swarthmore College Students go on Hunger Strike, Ask for Apology over Treatment of Protesters

Two of Swarthmore College’s fraternities were disbanded last week after revelations showed fraternity members used derogatory language towards women and the LGBT community, which revelations sparked protests. The protesters sat in the administrative office building and occupied the hallway and the college president’s office. The college president, Valerie Smith, said she would like to deliver a letter to the protesters, but was rebuffed by them.

Now, the college protesters demand an apology from Smith because she did not meet with them, and that she should institute a permanent ban on the disbanded fraternities. The protesters also said that the college should replace the fraternities with ones which include LGBT and minority students.
