UPDATE: The American University communications team informed us that it isn’t a campaign for Peltier’s release:

We noticed that your outlet ran a story about the statue of Leonard Peltier currently on display at American University. We are kindly requesting that you update your story with the following information from American University:

“American University regards this statue as an exhibited piece of art and takes no position on the advocacy movement. AU’s Katzen Museum is hosting the artist’s statue as an exhibit; it is not a permanent installation.  – American University Communications”

Best regards,
