The state of Arkansas, led by a majority-Republican legislature and its Republican governor, Asa Hutchinson, passed two student journalism free speech protection bills into law. One protected college journalists from retaliation, and the other covered high school journalists. Both bills’ wordings were explicit in their protection of journalists’ First Amendment rights.
