Lewisburg, Penn.~ The Bucknell University Conservatives Club will be selling carnations and roses to benefit Susquehanna Valley Women in Transition, a shelter for women and children who are victims of sexual assault and violence.
The Conservatives Club will be in the Langone Center at Bucknell University February 8-9 and 12-13 from 11a.m. until 1p.m. to take orders for flowers. They will be hand-delivered by club members in formal attire on Valentine’s Day. Carnations will be sold for $2 each, and roses will cost $6 each. Flowers will also be available for purchase on Valentine’s Day itself.
Deb Vicinsky, the secretary of the Conservatives Club, said, “We’re trying to reclaim Valentine’s Day by combating the message espoused by the Vagina Monologues. We want people to remember that Valentine’s Day is about celebrating women and love, not carrying on about reproductive organs.”
The flower sale promotes the sense of Valentine’s Day that embraces healthy relationships while helping women who’ve suffered from domestic violence.
The Bucknell University Conservatives Club was founded in September 2001 to combat the systematic exclusion of conservative, libertarian, and classical liberal ideas from the University. It publishes a well-known magazine, The Counterweight, and has hosted many speakers, including our guests from last year, Walter Williams and Ward Connerly.
One of the most successful student political organizations in the country, it was featured on the cover of the May 25, 2003 New York Times Magazine and has also received coverage from other broadcast and print media including MTV, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, the Washington Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and NPR.
