Flag Day At Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Penn. – In honor of the sixth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, the Bucknell University Conservatives Club will be constructing a memorial. The memorial will feature 2,996 flags, one for each victim of the attacks, and will be on display on the uphill lawn of Bucknell’s Langone Center on September 10 and 11.

As part of the memorial, the Conservatives Club is encouraging members of the community to sponsor a flag for one dollar. All donations will be given to the Semper Fi Fund, a charity that assists wounded marines returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

This is the third year the Conservatives Club have constructed the memorial. Last year the club also raised money for the Semper Fi Fund, and two years ago the proceeds went to aid the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Seeing all 2,996 flags helps students understand the true magnitude of the attacks. It is also a fitting tribute to the men and women who died that day to support those who are currently serving on the front lines working to make sure an attack like this never happens again.

The Bucknell University Conservatives Club was founded in September 2001 to combat the systematic exclusion of conservative, libertarian, and classical liberal ideas from the University. It publishes a well-known magazine, The Counterweight, and has hosted many speakers, most recently former Attorney General John Ashcroft.

Nick Mozal is the president of the Bucknell University Conservatives Club.
