To many cynical observers, “Gay Camp” may sound redundant but to the Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Community it is a summer retreat for campus activists. “I didn’t realize you could get paid to be what they’re calling a professional homo or working queer,” Ashleigh Ratchford, a junior at North Carolina A & T State University told The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Paula Wasley.
Originally, Ratchford had planned on a career as an FBI agent but she may find campus politics more lucrative. “After all, [the University of Maryland at] College Park has five distinct organizations that deal with sexuality issues and identities,” Wasley reports. “Some campuses have no such groups, or just one.”
The Towson, Maryland event drew 42 students wearing t-shirts that featured an upside-down triangle above the words, “Happy Camper.”
