Professor: Colleges Ought to Pay Women Extra for ‘Emotional Labor’
A female professor at University of San Francisco is pushing for colleges to pay women extra for “emotional labor,” as they expend emotional energy while they grade papers and other work-related activities. Brandi Lawless, a communications professor, said that “emotional labor” means the following:
“[D]emonstrations of sympathy and empathy, one-on-one attention, supportive communication, counseling, general development of personal relationships, and making a person ‘feel good.'”
