We bid a fond farewell to Robert M. O’Neil of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). In correspondence with me more than a decade ago, he was most gentlemanly.
O’Neil, a law professor and former president of the Universities of Virginia and Wisconsin, as well as the founding director of the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression, was involved with the AAUP for several decades. He served several terms as AAUP general counsel as well as chairing Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure.
He was 83 at the time of his passing.
