Senator blasts Biden, school shutdowns as anti-science
Senator Tim Scott, a South Carolina Republican, delivered a stinging rebuttal to the Left’s policies in response to President Joe Biden’s speech before Congress. His speech was derided by the Left, which mockingly referred to him by using a racist term “Uncle Tim” on the social media platform Twitter.
Big Tech censorship aside, Scott made several important points about how school shutdowns were terrible policies.
He blasted the nationwide shutdown policies that led to “too many churches being shut down” and also school districts’ decisions that led to “millions of kids [losing] a year of learning when they could not afford to lose a single day.” Scott called education “the closest thing to magic in America.”
Specifically, Scott criticized the school shutdown elites by saying that “Science has shown for months that schools are safe,” adding that “too often, powerful grown-ups set science aside” and these poor policy decisions made “the clearest case I’ve seen for school choice in our lifetime.”
The Left and the teachers’ unions have used the coronavirus pandemic as leverage to shut down schools, protect teachers’ jobs, and force school districts to concede on several issues unrelated to the pandemic. This situation has led to widespread calls from parents to re-open schools as soon as possible, in addition to some parents considering private schools or homeschooling options instead of public education.
Scott’s speech hit the nail on the head; parents are fed up with school shutdowns that harmed students’ academic progress.
