Shawnee State Professor Sues Employer over Discipline after Refusing to Call Student by Gender Pronoun

A professor at Shawnee State University is suing his employer because of internal discipline procedures after he refused to call a student by the student’s preferred gender pronoun. The student, who was born male, insisted Professor Nicholas Meriwether call him by his preferred feminine pronoun. When Meriwether refused, the student was upset and told administrators, who then punished Meriwether. The punishment was to force Meriwether to conform to gender pronouns, which he refused to do on the principle of freedom of speech.

The plaintiff, Professor Meriwether, will be receiving help from Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), which is a Christian legal group that helps people on freedom of speech, expression, and religion cases.
