State Teachers of the Year Get Vocal With President

I’ll bet you never knew this happened. “While the bulbs glared and pictures snapped I heard Abdul Wright’s voice,” Kelisa Wing, a State Teacher of the Year wrote in the Education Post. “Wright is the 2017 Minnesota Teacher of the Year who asked President Trump, ‘Can we sing Lift Every Voice and Sing?’ And the president said, ‘Yes.'”

“At that moment, I closed my eyes, placed my hand on my heart, and let my ears guide me. I sang as loudly and brazenly as I could.”

Lift every voice and sing, till earth and Heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.

“Mine was not the only voice that broke under the gravity of the moment, but we pushed through to the end. I allowed my hearing to guide me. I let my ears be my eyes.”
