12963739725_017fe6c068_b_public-schoolThe National School Boards Association (NSBA) came up with a list of the top ten things that make public schools exceptional in 2016.

See if you can spot any of these in a government school near you:

  • “Modernized career technical education (CTE)” (Do Instagram photos, tweets, facebook updates and the ability to Google oneself count?);
  • “Data Systems” (For what, you might ask?);
  • “High-Quality Pre-Kindergarten” (and how many students who are fortunate enough to receive it will remember it when they are post-Kindergarten?)
  • “English Language Learners and Reading” (But do they?) ;
  • “College-Going” (this may not be such a good idea if you are seeking employment when college is over);
  • “Elementary and Secondary Education Act Reauthorization” (They should work this last word into a spelling bee to see what happens: Wouldn’t it be funny if only the homeschoolers could spell it? Come to think of it, that’s what usually happens!);
  • “High School Course Taking” (Arguably this is a good thing, particularly if you are in high school.);
  • “Math Achievement” (Many employers are still waiting for this Great Leap Forward.);
  • “High School Graduation” (Something of a self-fulfilling prophecy: if you want to pass students, you will find a way, and many do.); and
  • “Public Schools Are Still The School of First Choice” (this one is a real stretch, particularly in regions where local and state governments limit)
