The University of Delaware will not rehire an adjunct professor who created a controversy when she said that American citizen Otto Warmbier got what he deserved. Warmbier was returned to the United States after spending over a year as a hostage in North Korea and died from injuries most likely sustained from his imprisonment.

Adjunct professor Katherine Dettwyler’s remarks were condemned by the university, which said that they will not rehire her for this upcoming year. The university said Dettwyler’s comments were not consistent with their values and they offer their condolences and sympathy to the Warmbier family.
